Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticised the Law and Justice organization (PiS) for not supporting the European Parliament resolution on EU defence. On Wednesday, the European Parliament voted on a resolution on strengthening the EU's defence capacity, which was adopted by a 419-by-204 majority. The paper incorporates the PO-PSL amendment, recognising the Shield of the East as a key Community safety project.

Tusk called the opposition's decision "worse than foolishness" and stated that "the people will not forgive them." PiS defends its decision, explaining opposition with consequences for the sovereignty of Poland. Paweł Jabłoński of the Law and Justice Office pointed out that the adoption of the resolution would mean the failure of any Polish defence competences.

PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński explained why the organization opposed the resolution. "Independence is your own currency, your own budget, your own military. Giving up the ability to decide on our safety is simply a failure of sovereignty," he wrote on the X. According to the Law and Justice, the resolution leads to weakening Poland's independency in defence issues and giving key decisions to the EU.

The resolution was adopted by the majority of MEPs, but the PiS and Confederacy politicians voted against. Prime Minister Tusk powerfully condemned the attitude of the Law and Justice in the European Parliament. “I have already said about PiS before: 'they are not patriots, they are idiots'. But what they have done late is worse than stupidity," said the Prime Minister.

The east Shield is simply a key Community safety task to strengthen EU defence at the border with Russia and Belarus. The resolution incorporates the PO-PSL amendment, which considers the Shield of the East to be a key Community safety project.

The European Parliament voted 419 votes in favour of the resolution, 204 votes against and 62 abstentions. The PiS and the Confederation were the only parties to vote against the resolution.

Prime Minister Tusk stressed that PiS politicians voted against strengthening Polish defence on the border with Russia and Belarus. "It truly smells like betrayal at a distance," added Tusk in the X-record.

The consequences of this decision may be very serious. The EU may recognise that Poland is incapable to fulfil its defence obligations. This may lead to a weakening of Poland's position in the EU and the failure of part of Polish defence competence.

Accordingly, Prime Minister Tusk called on PiS politicians to reconsider their decision. "The people will not forgive them," said the Prime Minister. PiS defends its decision, explaining opposition with consequences for the sovereignty of Poland.
