What about Nicolas Maduro? Venezuela's MFA chief demands the immediate release of erstwhile leader

Venezuelan MFA chief Yvan Gil appealed to the United States for the immediate release of the overthrown leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The pair were intercepted in Caracas by US peculiar Forces and were subsequently transported to the United States. They're both expected to answer to the fresh York court.

"Venezuela demands "the immediate release by the United States government of the constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro and his wife, First woman Cilia Flores," said Yvan Gil at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. In his statement, he described the US's actions as an illegal military operation directed against Venezuela.

– Despite these actions, taken under conditions of deep technological and military asymmetry between our country and the atomic powers of the United States (...), we decided to open a diplomatic channel to resolve our differences," said the minister. He added that Venezuela took this step not due to submission or fear, but due to "persuading that dialog is the only civilized way between nations."

Gil besides stressed that Venezuela chose "the way of peace and sovereignty", "dialogue without abandoning the principles", "internal reconciliation without forgetting justice" and "international cooperation based on the legal equality of states". He besides referred to the law on amnesty for political prisoners adopted last week. "Today we are working on the process of recognising past wrongs, forgiveness and reconciliation," he said.

Let us remind you that on 3 January the US peculiar Forces carried out targets strikes in Caracas and another cities of Venezuela. During the operation, American soldiers captured Nicolas Maduro and his wife and then transported them to the US. Maduro was brought to trial, accused, among others, of “addictive conspiracy”. However, he did not plead guilty and declared himself “a prisoner of war”.
