Karp is an integral part of the Polish Christmas supper, but last year's price surge prompted any to search replacements for this conventional fish. Are we afraid that this year past will repeat itself and we will look again for alternatives to carp? Will prices be as unpredictable as last year?
Preparations for Christmas Eve
Christmas is coming, only 20 days left. This is simply a time erstwhile many people focus on ending most Christmas preparations. Many households are now starting an intense culinary stage, preparing the first dishes for Christmas Eve.
Carp, being 1 of the conventional 12 Christmas feasts, always takes its place on the Christmas table. However, Poles remember last year erstwhile prices of this fish rose sharply before Christmas, resulting in abrupt changes in plans of many people. So what are the expectations of the carp price situation this year? Do we have a akin scenario?
How much does carp cost in December 2023?
According to reports from the portal legartis.pl, this year's Christmas does not announce a repeat of the year 2022. Even carpi prices have fallen somewhat – the Vice-President of Poland Karp, Andrzej Dmuchowski, suggests that this year the price of this popular fish may oscillate between PLN 25 and 30 per kilo, which represents a delicate decrease.
The trade networks are already preparing for Christmas madness, offering a variety of carp parts. For example, in Kaufland various pieces of fish are available at different prices: tusk for 3,99 PLN, payments for 4,49 PLN and fillet for 5,99 PLN (all prices for 100 g). Netto and Lidl, on the another hand, present fresh carp payments – the first network has valued a kilo at PLN 49.99, while Lidl has an additional cost of PLN 20. However, it is crucial to note that the lobe with Lidel is with skin, while the 1 with Netto is without it.
How about a replacement?
Unless carp prices meet our expectations, you may consider choosing another fish as a substitute. Cod seems a reasonable choice – the Atlantic species is available in Aldi at a price of PLN 8.49 per 100 g, while in Kaufland for 100 g fillet can be obtained for 3.99 PLN. It may be that any people will be curious in the sandapple, but due to its lower popularity in Poland, it may be harder to access. In fish shops the price per kilo of this fish without a head is about PLN 63, while for a kg fillet about PLN 89.
These various prices propose that the situation from erstwhile Christmas will most likely not be repeated. Karp may not gotta worry about his dominant position on the Christmas table – however, the final decision depends on those preparing the supper.
