On 5 February 2025, at the age of 96, Captain Juliusz Kulesza, ps. “Julek” – a soldier of the Home Army, the last of the defending heroes of the PWPW Redoubt during the Warsaw Uprising, retired.

Juliusz Kulesza was associated with the Polish safety Printing Works throughout his life.

From 1942 to 1944 he worked at PWPW as an apprentice – lithographic sketch artist. From the second day of the Warsaw Uprising to 26 August 1944, together with the branch of the National Army PWB/17/S (Underground Banknote Production Plant), as a liaison / shooter, “Julek” took part in fights for the PWPW complex on the streets of Sanguszko and Rybaki.

After the Uprising, he was imprisoned in the Dulag 121 camp in Pruszków, from which he escaped twice.

After the war in 1954 he received an ASP diploma in the graphic department at the studio of prof. Tadeusz Kulisiewicz. He later participated in many exhibitions of art works – collective and individual. For many years he besides designed publishing graphics, mostly book graphics.

He was the author of many commemorative books devoted mainly to the Warsaw Uprising, and besides became an outstanding chronicler of the PWPW Reduta. He is the author and co-author of eighteen book publications, as well as respective slogans in the Encyclopedia of the Warsaw Uprising.

The Polonia Warszawa sports club, whose football squad has faithfully cheered since the pre-war times, was peculiarly sentimental.

He was awarded, among others, the Knight's Cross, the Knight's Cross and the Officers of the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 2015, the IPN honored him with the award "National Memory curator".

In 2018 he was promoted to captain of the Polish Army.

He was an highly modest and affirmative man reasoning about others, characterized by a subtle sense of humor and incredible memory. "The Faithful Reader of the Bulletin" – this is how he signed us a dedication on the first page of his book entitled "101 My Artists", published in 2022 by PWPW.

The man of legend who will always stay in our hearts.

Funeral celebrations – 20 February 2025 at 14:00 will start Mass in St. Vincent's Church and Paulo (wood church) at Brodnowski Cemetery.
