The government extends the buffer region at the border with Belarus for another 90 days. The decision was signed by the Minister of Interior and Administration, Tomasz Siemoniak. The fresh regulation will enter into force on Sunday, 8 June 2025.
Buffer region extended – what does it mean?
Buffer zone, first introduced June 13, 2024, aimed at expanding safety on the Polish-Belarusian border. The prohibition of staying in the designated area applies to both civilians and criminal groups that organize illegal border crossings.
Previous renewals:
- 11 September 2024 – 9 December 2024 (first extension)
- 10 December 2024 – 9 March 2025 (second extension)
- 10 March 2025 – 7 June 2025 (third extension)
- 8 June 2025 – another 90 days (update decision)
‘Cache region checks’ – effectiveness confirmed by data
The Ministry of Interior and Administration stresses that the introduction of the buffer region has yielded tangible results:
- A fall in attempts to illegally cross the border by 28% – from 31.2 thousand. (before the region was introduced) to 22.5 thousand. in the last 372 days.
- Increased safety of services – Border Guards, Police and troops.
- Restriction of smuggling groupswhich is in line with Poland's global obligations.
Migration force – hybrid arms of Belarus
The Minsk authorities have been utilizing migrants for years as a tool for destabilising the European Union. Organized groups, frequently numbering respective dozen, effort to push the border, ignoring the orders of the service.
"This is part of hybrid actions aimed at weakening the safety of Poland and the EU" – emphasizes the Ministry of abroad Affairs.
What's next with border security?
Extension of the buffer region to facilitate further modernisation of border dams and make it hard for smugglers to carry out illegal activities. The government is announcing the continuation of measures to strengthen the protection of the east border.
