Bucharest mayor leads Romania after processing 95 percent of the vote

Bucharest mayor Nicosor Dan continues to lead the second circular of presidential elections in Romania, winning 54.22% of the vote, ahead of opposition organization leader Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR), George Simion, who obtained 45.78% of the vote, according to the results of the Central Election Commission after 95% of the vote.

A second circular of presidential elections took place in Romania on Sunday. The first circular of elections was held on 4 May. The most votes were won by the leader of the Nationalist organization Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR) George Simion (41%) and Mayor of Bucharest Nicosor Dan (21%).

The presidential elections in Romania in 2025 are held during the political crisis triggered by the annulment of the results of the first circular of 2024 in which the independent candidate Calin Georgescu prevailed, but the vote consequence was cancelled due to alleged interference in the election process via social media. This decision sparked protests in the country and accusations of suppression of opposition by the Romanian authorities, among others from the US administration.
