The British Court of Appeal has dropped the charges of execution against a man who mistakenly spent 38 years in prison, which is considered the longest judicial mistake in the past of the country. “ The Guardian paper reported on Tuesday.

"The conviction of a man who spent 38 years in prison was annulled in an appeal court, which is considered to be the longest-lasting mistake of justice in the past of Britain," the paper reported.

Peter Sullivan, presently 68, was wrongly convicted in 1987 for killing a young girl in northwestern England, reported the newspaper. The man always denied his guilt, and his lawyers tried twice unsuccessfully to overturn the conviction.

The results of the fresh tests commissioned by the Criminal Case Review Commission (CCRC) showed that Sullivan's DNA was not present in preserved samples from the scene, reported Guardian. Instead, the tracks found belonged to another unidentified man.

Sullivan will now be released from prison, according to ITV.
