On Wednesday noon, a dramatic event occurred in the capital of Norway, Oslo. The building of the Norwegian Parliament, Storting, was closed due to a bomb alarm that caused panic among residents and politicians. Oslo police rapidly responded to the situation, guarding the entrance of the building while parliamentarians remained inside waiting for further instructions.
The head of Parliament's security, Pal Munck, stressed that all essential action had been taken in consequence to a police informing of a possible threat. This event, although unusual, is an alarming signal to the full country, suggesting the anticipation of attacking democratic institutions.
The massive mobilisation of police forces around the Parliament building, which is in the heart of Oslo, shows the seriousness of the situation. The nearest streets were closed, creating a safety area, and PST's peculiar services were alerted and active in the activities.
Norway, although mostly considered to be a country with a comparatively low level of terrorist threat, must besides face this problem. The study published by PST in late March warned of an increase in threat by utmost Islamists, suggesting a change in the country's safety landscape.
