Biejat about Trzaskovsky's defeat: "The effect of half-measures and becoming like the far right"

dailyblitz.de 4 weeks ago

Shortly after the conclusion of the second circular of presidential elections in Poland, which ended with the triumph of Karol Nawrocki (50.89%), 1 of the most controversial figures of the Polish left - Deputy Marshal of the Senate, Magdalena Biejat. In her comment on the X platform, she assessed that the key mistake of the full run was to “be like the far right” and deficiency the courage to deliver on programme promises.

Biejat: ‘The measures have led to failure’

Magdalena Biejat stated that KO's failure was the consequence of a long-term maneuver of avoiding confrontation with the ruling and inconsistent ideological attitude:

"This is the effect of half-measure policy and becoming like the far right. halt blocking change. It's time to fulfill the promises of 2023 and halt looking for excuses. The alternate is only drift to 2027 and the regulation of fundamentalists.”

She addressed first of all the progressive environments that felt disappointed by Trzaskovsky's electoral strategy. According to Biejat, the KO candidate was not strong adequate on valuable issues, which yet cost him the votes of liberal voters.

And that catarine over and over again. Poles voted for Nawrocki, Mentzen and Braun due to the fact that they wanted reproductive rights and partnerships that the government did not give them. https://t.co/QvTA7tTNFz

Casper Kita: ‘The catharine over and over again’

The reaction to these words was, among others, the entry by writer Kacpra Kity, who ironically referred to Biejat's narrative:

"And this catarine over and over again. Poles voted for Nawrocki, Mentzen and Braun due to the fact that they wanted reproductive rights and partnerships that the government did not give them.”

His comment was to emphasise that, despite the declared support for LGBTBQ+ rights or abortion, both Trzaskowski and his surroundings did not propose a sufficiently strong improvement program that would convince the electorate of the left.

Lack of ideological cohesion as a run problem

It was not the first time during the presidential run of 2025 that there were allegations concerning the flexible and even obscure programming line of Rafał Trzaskowski. Critics pointed out that the candidate for the civilian Coalition attempted to satisfy at the same time various factions of the society without making clear commitments.

During the tv debate on TVP, Krzysztof Stanowski put it with the words:

“You cannot have all view on all subject.”

This conviction later became a frequently cited media theme. His author suggested that Trzaskowski tried to do precisely that for a while – to have “all things for everyone”, which may be rhetorical, but in practice leads to a failure of credibility.

Change of speech in the final phase of the campaign

At the turn of April and May 2025, Trzaskowski and his staff began trying to regain authenticity. An example was his conversation with Sławomir Mentzen, in which the candidate spoke openly about his views on education, culture and human relations. Although any commentators considered this a "too late reaction", the very fact of this debate was well received by any media.

Results of the second round: Trzazkowski Evening, Nawrocki Night

The final consequence of the second circular of the presidential election was close but decisive:

  • Karol Nawrocki: 50.89%
  • Rafał Trzaskowski: 49.11%

Early in the evening on May 15, 2025, poll data exit poll IPSOS suggested Trzaskowski's triumph (50.3% vs 49.7%). On the same evening, the KO candidate appeared before the sympathizers, announcing himself the winner and presenting his wife as the future First woman of the Republic of Poland.

However, later studies of the Late Poll (published at 23:00) already indicated Nawrocki's advantage (50.7% vs 49.3%). The statistical mistake of the survey was +/- 1 percent point, which made the consequence inactive tense, but the trend was already hard to reverse. The final figures of the Electoral Commission confirmed the triumph of the candidate supported by the Law and Justice.

Are there precedents for election results?

Although no serious evidence has yet been found of breaches of electoral procedures, experts and analysts do not leave the question of the legality of certain aspects of the campaign, peculiarly as regards electoral backing or public media access to different candidates.

However, so far no authoritative proposals have been issued for the annulment of election results. Pursuant to Article 148 of the Polish Constitution and the provisions of the Act on the election of the President, complaints about the results of the elections are submitted to the Constitutional Court.

The current jurisprudence of the Constitutional Tribunal in electoral matters (e.g. SK 25/05, SK 30/10) indicates that annulment of elections is only possible if there are serious violations of procedures or influence on the result of the vote. There is no reason for this to happen today.

Summary – Election lessons 2025

Magdalena Biejat, although she failed herself in the First round, continues her political activity while criticizing the Citizen Coalition's line of action. Her opinions may be controversial, but they have their own reflection among any leftist environments.

The presidential election of 2025 showed that the Polish electorate does not choose "half-measures". An effective run must not only be strategical but besides authentic and ready to make hard decisions. The tactics of avoiding controversy can be more harmful than beneficial.
