Bengaluru Int’l Airport Carbon Accreditation

The Level 5 Accreditation was formally presented to Bengaluru Airport (BLR) representatives during the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly.

The assembly, which took place in New Delhi from April 15 to 17, provided the backdrop for this groundbreaking announcement.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) released an official statement on Thursday detailing the achievement. The accreditation recognises the airport’s exceptional progress in reducing its environmental impact through systematic carbon management.

Emission Reduction Targets

Bengaluru Airport (BLR) earned the Level 5 status by achieving a remarkable 95.6 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

This substantial reduction has enabled the airport to reach net-zero status for these emission categories a full 7 years ahead of its original 2030 target.

Environmental experts classify carbon emissions into different scopes. Scope 1 emissions encompass direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organisation, such as fuel combustion and company vehicles.

Scope 2 emissions refer to indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the reporting company.

Commenting on this significant achievement, Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO of BIAL, emphasised the collaborative nature of the accomplishment.

“The recognition from ACI affirms the collective effort we’ve made to not only reduce our carbon footprint but also to support a culture of safety, innovation, and community stewardship.”

A Hub of Innovation

Bengaluru Airport (BLR) has consistently positioned itself as a leader in technological advancement and sustainable operations. Located approximately 40 kilometres from Bengaluru’s city centre, the airport serves as a critical transportation hub for southern India’s technology capital.

Since its inauguration in 2008, Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) has experienced remarkable growth in passenger traffic and operational capacity.

The airport now connects travellers to numerous domestic and international destinations, supporting Karnataka’s position as a global business destination.

Sustainability Initiatives

The airport’s journey to Level 5 Accreditation involved implementing multiple sustainability measures across its operations. These include transitioning to renewable energy sources, optimising energy consumption through advanced building management systems, and deploying electric vehicles throughout airport operations.

BIAL has also invested heavily in on-site solar energy generation, with expansive solar installations helping to power airport operations with clean energy. Water conservation efforts, waste management programs, and biodiversity protection initiatives have complemented the carbon reduction strategy.

Global Context

This achievement positions Bengaluru Airport (BLR) among a select group of global airports demonstrating exceptional commitment to environmental sustainability. As aviation faces increasing pressure to address its environmental impact, Bengaluru’s success provides a valuable blueprint for airports worldwide.

The accomplishment also aligns with broader national goals for carbon reduction and environmental protection in India, showcasing the country’s ability to implement world-class sustainability practices in major infrastructure projects.

As Bengaluru Airport (BLR) continues to expand, these established environmental protocols will help ensure that future growth proceeds in an environmentally responsible manner, maintaining the balance between operational efficiency and ecological stewardship.
