Trzaskowski's defeat – a blow to Donald Tusk's government

Although the presidential election was not a direct plebiscite over the government, many commentators point out that the consequence of the vote is primarily attributable to Donald Tusk.

"It is hard to imagine Tusk as inactive Prime Minister: Trzaskowski's defeat is primarily a government defeat" – wrote Michał Danielewski, editor-in-chief of OKO.press.

According to political commentators, this consequence may have a direct bearing on the sustainability of the ruling coalition. Patrick Nightingale from Virtual Poland stated that if it had not been for the tragic ranking of the government, Trzaskowski would have won these elections. He besides stressed that no clear leader in government outside of Tusk may lead to its disintegration:

“There is not a single individual in the full government crew who can join the coalition (as much as possible)... Only Kosiniak-Kamish, perhaps, but not for that reason KO won the election to now hand over the portfolio of the Prime Minister to the man of the organization whose support should be sought under the microscope" – he noted.

Also a writer Peter Nisztor There is no doubt: "Charles Nawrocki's triumph means 1 thing: Donald Tusk should resign".

Are we facing a fresh political chapter?

The triumph of Karol Nawrocki may mark the beginning of a fresh political era. Although formally acting as head of state, his strong ties to the Law and Justice Office may consequence in a tightening of relations with the current parliament. At the same time, calls for co-habitation and fresh openingto avoid political stalemate.

As the practice of the case law of the Constitutional Court shows (e.g. judgement K 9/11), the stableness of the executive authority in the parliamentary office strategy depends on the ability of the president and the Government to cooperate, even in a political conflict. If the parties do not find a common language, it is possible to return to the political chaos known from the turn of 2005–07.
