NOIDA- Asia’s largest airport, Noida International Airport (DXN) at Jewar, will be inaugurated on October 30, with commercial operations expected to begin within 45 days, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced.

The launch phase will connect at least 10 cities, making it the National Capital Region’s second major airport after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

Speaking at the Yatri Sewa Diwas function at Hindon Airport (HDO) in Ghaziabad, Naidu said efforts are underway to ensure readiness. Airlines including IndiGo (6E) and Akasa Air (QP) have already confirmed commitments to start operations, with routes to cities such as Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU) under discussion.

The Jewar project covers 1,334 hectares and is being developed in phases. Phase one includes a single 3,900-metre runway and a terminal with an annual passenger handling capacity of 12 million.

In total, the airport is planned to expand across four phases to accommodate up to 70 million passengers annually.

Officials expect around six million passengers in the first year. Core infrastructure is nearly complete: the runway and ATC tower are ready, the terminal structure is built, aerobridges are installed, and baggage handling systems and e-gates have been fitted. Interior works such as seating, lighting, toilets, and galleries are in the final stage.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) licence remains the last major requirement before flight operations can begin.

Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), the airport concessionaire, confirmed that finishing and technical installations are progressing, and Operational Readiness and Transition (ORAT) trials are underway. These include simulations, baggage system testing, and ground handler familiarisation.

Airlines and Route Planning

Airlines have started securing operations at Jewar. IndiGo (6E) signed an MoU in November 2023 to serve as the launch carrier, following a validation flight conducted in December.

Akasa Air (QP), which began operations in 2022, has also committed to building a strong presence at the airport.

Initial routes are expected to connect Jewar with key domestic hubs, including Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU). At least 10 cities will be linked during the first phase, with gradual network expansion as infrastructure and demand grow.

Cargo and Strategic Role

Beyond passenger connectivity, the airport is being positioned as a major cargo hub for northern India.

The strategic location near the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Dedicated Freight Corridor enhances its potential as a logistics gateway.

Officials believe this role will make Jewar a critical part of India’s growing air cargo ecosystem.

Passenger-Centric Initiatives

Naidu also announced upcoming nationwide upgrades for Indian airports. Free WiFi will be available at all airports within two months, while libraries and dedicated kids’ zones will be added within three months.

These initiatives aim to enhance the passenger experience both at major hubs and regional airports.

Hindon Airport Expansion

At the same event, Naidu highlighted progress at Hindon Airport (HDO), which has expanded to connect 16 cities since its commercial debut in October 2019. Current destinations include Kolkata (CCU), Chennai (MAA), Goa (GOI), Bengaluru (BLR), and Jammu (IXJ).

However, the terminal is already saturated, with only two aircraft parking bays causing delays during schedule disruptions.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has requested nine hectares of additional land from the Uttar Pradesh government to expand terminal capacity and add more bays.
