The uncontrolled improvement of artificial intelligence can destruct humanity, says Prof. Andrzej Zybertowicz. Strong steps are needed to prevent this threat. The problem is that in a democracy that has been degenerated by social media, it is highly unrealistic to engage in specified actions...
Prof. Andrzej Zybertowicz spoke about the problem on the PCh24 tv programme. Red. Paweł Chmielewski spoke to him about the AI on the book "AI. Exploration". – According to techno, the future is expected to look great. There will be no poverty, there will be no sickness. possibly there won't be any old age, and if there is, it's cheerful due to the fact that we'll live long in health. – he said.
– There will be no wars, there will be no increases in energy, there will be no misinformation, there will be no manipulation, and since we will not gotta deal with any tiring, boring, damaging wellness or emotions work, we will be able to be artists, reformers, or even research the most distant galaxies. In another words, we are about to have something like paradise. – he added.
– In Silicon Valley, among the richest people in the world, who have tens of billions of dollars, is the belief that we are on the verge of building technologies that will bring humanity to a paradise future. - He said.
However, according to Prof. Zybertowicz, technoenthusiasm is “the most dangerous ideology of modern times”.
As the student explained, for any technoenthusians, man is only a “certain link in the process not even evolution but technology.” – The cell, which is simply a ladder, after which evolution will enter a higher phase and then this ladder will reject. [...] Man, as he was formed historically or in the form given by God, abruptly becomes an obstacle to the improvement of any higher, wonderful minds. [...] To them, a man is simply a ballast, an obstacle that needs to be passed or simply removed. He stressed.
He added that there are techno-enthusiasts who think in another categories, that is, they think that technological improvement will solve various problems, but they do not anticipate or search to change humanity itself.
According to Prof. Zybertowicz, technoenthusians are not primarily guided by the desire for control. Reflecting on the motivations that drive the pursuit of improvement of AI, he pointed to curiosity. – Artificial intelligence would not have entered the current level if not for hundreds of prominent minds curiosity was the main impulse to push them into action – he said.
Problem is, things can end badly. He referred to Geoffrey Hinton, a Nobel Prize winner in Physics from 2024. Hinton is 1 of the co-writers of the current AI models. After 10 years at Google, he resigned. As he explained, he wanted freedom of speech, not to be trapped by corporations; but it was more than that. He confessed that “some part of it” regretted having put his hand on the improvement of AI. As he pointed out, from past it follows that erstwhile the higher civilization met with the lower civilization, there was always genocide. If you don't want to, that's how these meetings ended. So if the AI acquires intellectual abilities beyond human skills...
The conversation then affected the impact of AI on the political system. – Internet technologies, especially social media, have caused structural poisoning of the human infosphere, a continuous overload of information that is mostly false and nonsense. They make us lose the ability to separate not only fact from falsehood, good, and evil, but besides crucial from void. We spend an tremendous amount of time in dealing with gadgets that are sewn together by dozens, if not hundreds of different artificial intelligence models, and through algorithms they manage the information they get to us. Our cognitive abilities are deteriorating. - He said.
Social media devastated political communication. – And devastated political communication weakened the process of recruiting political elites. People who talk well and on a level, calmly and with respect for others, lose their power of communication. Even honest politicians who, to put it this way, have God in their hearts, are primitive of their message in order to break through it. They succumb to media temptations to hate - He said.
He admitted that he himself had been encouraged by journalists to attack individual harshly, so that he could then sale it under the slogan "the President's advisor violently expressed himself" on someone's subject. That would be good in terms of a fewfoldness.
– These journalists don't should be bad people, but they're part of a device that flattens communication. And flattened communication is associated with a deterioration in the quality of politicians. Politicians who do not realize the challenges of their time contribute to the degradation of institutions forming the legislative process - He said.
So on the 1 hand we have a demolished democratic process, and on the another hand multi-hundred billion fortunes of giants from Silicon Valley – and from China, where digital giants, like TikTok's bosses, besides operate.
– TikTok is 1 of the top degenerates of human psyche. It's a Chinese invention, controlled by artificial intelligence algorithms. – he said. According to any experts, algorithms are designed to direct more pro-social and liable content to Chinese citizens, and to show rubbish in the West.
How will this problem be solved? Prof. Zybertovich appealed to Jack Dukaj. At 1 time, Dukaj wrote in the paper “Gazeta Wyborcza” that in order to overcome the problem of technological news, we will gotta retreat from democracy in any way. According to Zybertovich, this is most likely an accurate intuition. In his view, the improvement of AI is presently more dangerous than its benefits and it will should be stopped. This can most likely not be done in democratic procedures, due to the fact that the digital "armour race" is presently underway – but unlike during the Cold War, it is not controlled by the states, due to the fact that private companies are besides involved.
This may be the case, he pointed out that "without breaking the paradigm of democracy...we will not save humanity." It is theoretically possible that AI will take control of the weapons systems, including atomic weapons. As a result, there are 3 key solutions: dialog and democracy; semi-democratic; the solution itself will appear as a consequence of a violent shock.
According to the scholar, the democratic way is simply very unrealistic, and the chance to implement it is close to zero. It would mean that democratic politicians talk openly about what is essential and what costs it entails; but in modern democracy, which can be called even a memocracy, they simply would not win.
The second solution, semi-democratic, is the road linked to a circumstantial deep state. – Leading analysts, strategists, heads of service and large corporations will realize what the AI experts are saying. They will realize these threats – and below the radar of the public there will be an agreement of people who represent, let's call it, an authoritarian reasoning kind in the US, China, Israel, Iran, Russia, another key countries. They will realize that a digital arms race can slip under the control of anyone, due to the fact that erstwhile a digital arms race leads to artificial intelligence capable of autonomously setting its targets, we do not know what these goals will be. There may be targets for us to mourn. – said Prof. Andrzej Zybertowicz.
In his opinion, the likelihood of specified a solution is higher than in the democratic version, but inactive low.
Finally, the 3rd solution is that the improvement of AI will consequence in a major disaster. – Millions will die, hundreds of millions of people will die, and then they'll all come around, saying, you should have listened to those who talked about the request to halt this improvement due to the fact that you gotta keep it under control. - He said. The “optimism” of this script is that the cataclysm will at the same time be clear adequate to prompt humanity to act, but not strong adequate to destruct humanity.
