The bishop of the American Diocese of San Bernardino temporarily relieved illegal immigrants of his work to attend Mass. This has to do with president Donald Trump's migration policy introduced in January this year, according to which state services capture specified people to deport them from the US.
The Diocese of San Bernardino in confederate California is 1 of the most multicultural throughout the United States. Most of its inhabitants are those from Latin American countries. Many of them or their loved ones have no regular residence in the United States.
For respective months, immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) patrols have been seen close places of worship. For this reason, many Latin American Catholics fear coming to the church due to the fact that they may be detained by officers.
Addressing the fears of those surviving under constant threat of arrest, Bishop Alberto Rojas published on 8 July a decree in which he recalled canon 87 §1 of the Code of Canon Law, allowing to grant dispensation from the observance of church law "for the spiritual welfare of the faithful."
At the same time, the hierarch explained that this dispensation does not call into question the Sunday value Holy Mass. It simply aims to defend spiritually those who, due to well - founded fear, cannot participate.
He added that his decision was valid until a fresh disposition was issued erstwhile the situation improved.
