BENGALURU- The low-cost subsidiary of the Tata Group, Air India Express (IX), is pushing forward with a robust expansion plan focused on improving domestic and international connectivity across key Indian cities.
The airline, known for its strong Middle East network and growing South Asian links, has now turned its attention to increasing its footprint in Trichy and its primary hub, Bengaluru.
The latest additions indicate a significant increase in capacity and destinations, reinforcing Air India Express’s commitment to connect Tier-II cities and regional airports.

Air India Express Adding More Flights
Trichy (Tiruchirappalli) has emerged as a pivotal station for Air India Express over the past few months. Currently, the airline operates daily flights to Chennai, four weekly flights to Mumbai, and two weekly flights to Bengaluru from the city.
However, beginning June 1, 2025, this frequency is set to rise significantly with the introduction of two new daily flights—one each to Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
The addition of Hyderabad marks a new domestic destination for Air India Express from Trichy, and the increased frequency to Bengaluru—jumping from 2 to 9 weekly flights.
These new flights demonstrate strong demand in these sectors. These enhancements will double the domestic capacity out of Trichy, providing more options for travelers and ensuring better connectivity within India.
By the time these new flights launch, Air India Express will be operating a total of 27 weekly domestic flights from Trichy. Air India Express already has a strong international presence from Trichy, especially in the Gulf and Southeast Asian regions. The airline connects the city with key Middle Eastern destinations like Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Doha, Kuwait City, Muscat, and Sharjah.
These flights are crucial for the large expatriate population from Tamil Nadu working in the Gulf nations. With these routes, the airline offers an affordable and reliable alternative to IndiGo, which has a monopoly on many of these routes. Air India Express will serve passengers who seek budget-friendly travel options without compromising on essential services.
Bengaluru, the largest hub for Air India Express, and the airline’s upcoming additions reflect the strategic focus on this southern metro. The airline will introduce daily flights to Kathmandu and twice-daily services to Kochi, apart from daily flights to Trichy, starting from June 1, 2025.

Enhancing Competitive Edge
The expansion also reinforces Air India Express’s competitive stance against other regional and budget carriers, especially IndiGo. IndiGo had the monopoly on most of these domestic sectors until now. With aggressive route launches and a continued focus on international connections, the airline is attempting to capture a share of India’s fast-growing budget travel market.
With its growing fleet of Boeing 737-8 aircraft, the airline is well-positioned to scale its network both domestically and internationally.

Bottom Line
Air India Express is charting a new course in Indian aviation. The airline’s main focus lies not just on major hubs but also on regional expansion. Bengaluru, as always, continues to be the airline’s largest hub.
Passengers from Trichy and other cities can fly with greater convenience. Passengers will have expanded access to both domestic and international destinations through the airline’s largest hub – Bengaluru. The airline is likely to continue the growth in the flights further in the coming months.
