OFF Radio Kraków, which was co-founded by artificial intelligence for a week, returns to the earlier expression of mainly musical radio – the editor-in-chief, the liquidator of Radio Kraków Marcin Pulit, reported on Monday. In his opinion, the experimental task had already met its nonsubjective – it prompted discussion.
"At OFF Radio Kraków we end with broadcasts created by journalists with the participation of artificial intelligence, we return to the expression of the programme mainly musical, which is inactive broadcast online and in the DAB+ system" – said the liquidator of Radio Kraków, in the structures in which OFF Radio Kraków operates. "We assumed that this task would last up to 3 months. After a week, however, we collected so many observations, opinions, conclusions that we considered that its continuation was pointless," Pulit informed.
As he stressed, from the beginning the task was to be a voice in the debate on the opportunities and threats posed by the improvement of artificial intelligence, due to the fact that the mission of public radio is to observe changing reality, to ask questions, to provoke discussions about civilizational challenges. "This was the goal of a radio experimentation which was part of a debate under the motto Artificial intelligence. What gives us, what takes us. And it worked," the liquidator noted.
He added that the scale of interest in the task in the niche, Internet-digital program outside the main antenna of the regional station was surprising. This showed, in his opinion, how many areas are unregulated – image protection, recognition of content created with AI support, copyright. "We were besides amazed by the level of emotion that accompanied this experiment, the attribution of nonexistent intentions and actions to us, sharp are formulated on the basis of false reports," Pulit stated.
As he estimated, the radio cared from the beginning about the clear marking of content generated utilizing AI tools and clearly communicated that it did not intend to replace people with a machine. Nevertheless, according to the liquidator, she experienced the operation of the post-truth mechanism, resulting in facts losing meaning in comparison with the communicative that appeals to the emotions of the audience and their individual beliefs. "For us, radio people, and the full journalistic community in Poland, this should be an crucial lesson," Pulit stressed.
He besides informed that OFF Radio Kraków is the subject of investigation by prof. Stanisław Jędrzejewski from the Kozminski Academy and a group of scientists from the Jagiellonian University.
“AI is and will be more and more present in our lives. In the coming years Poland is waiting to make legal standards, specifying the usage of artificial intelligence. Our experimentation showed how many issues request to be regulated, and our radio experiences can be utilized during the work on the bill," concluded Marcin Pulit.
OFF Radio Kraków began operating in 2015. It is simply a channel broadcast on the Internet, in digital technology, and the degree of its reception is, as the liquidator noted, comparatively small, "with close listening to zero".
The announcement that this radio would be co-created by artificial intelligence triggered a wave of comments. The Ministry of Digital Affairs was besides curious in the topic. People who previously created OFF Radio Kraków, in an open letter, reported that respective people lost their jobs in connection with the fresh expression of the station in early September. Pulit demented these reports and stated that "no 1 due to the introduction of artificial intelligence tools was released from Radio Kraków".
On Radio Kraków is working on the preparation of the fresh software expression OF OFF Radio Kraków, at the beginning of next year the channel will have a fresh release. The program is to be addressed mainly to young people, it will most likely be co-created by students.
