An abortion conviction in Britain that raises serious doubts about the state of freedom of speech in this country. A 64-year-old retired doctor, Dr. Livia Tossici-Bolt, was found guilty of violating the public safety order around the abortion center. Her responsibility was holding a poster with the inscription, “If you want, I am here to talk” in the abortion clinic buffer zone. Although she showed no signs of harassment or intimidation, the court found that she had broken the law and imposed a £20,000 financial punishment on her. Earlier, the same female was convicted for praying the rosary.

This case falls within the broader context of tightening the rules on freedom of expression in the UK, where buffer zones around all abortion centres have been introduced, prohibiting any form of “impact” which includes even silent prayers or offering conversation. Earlier, in 2021, Ofcom – a British media regulator – tightened the rules on hatred speech, extending the catalogue of protected categories of persons and banning criticism due to, inter alia, sex, race, religion or sexual orientation. In practice, both regulations service to censor citizens with non-liberal views.

These actions rise concerns about gradually limiting freedom of speech and introducing censorship in the name of combating hatred speech. Cases like the 1 with Dr. Tossici-Bolt show that even peaceful expression of opinion can lead to severe legal consequences. What kind of democracy in which human rights defenders have difficulty even formulating their demands? At 1 time it would be the standards of the 3rd planet countries, present this is Western Europe. Freedom of speech is 1 of the pillars of European civilization. Its limitation can lead to a dangerous precedent, where the limits of what can be said are increasingly narrowed down. It is so worth carefully observing developments in the UK and considering the consequences of specified actions for another countries, including Poland. Finally, in Poland too, the government is trying to push the bill against “talk of hatred”.
