100 attempts to violate the polish-belarusian border in 1 day

In fresh months the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border has remained tense, with many attempts to illegally cross the border and incidents involving migrants and border services.

On 12 March, nearly 100 specified trials were recorded, and in the towns of Krynki, Płaska, Michałowo and Mielnik migrants tried to breach the method barrier and cross the border rivers. In the area of Mielnik, people who did not make it to the Polish side attacked Polish patrols with stones. Border defender officers besides detained 4 couriers: a Ukrainian citizen, 2 Uzbek citizens and a 26-year-old Pole who were to transport illegal migrants into Western Europe.

In September 2024, more than 2500 attempts were reported to illegally cross the border, which was an increase compared to July and August. On average, about 120 specified trials were recorded daily. Migrants became increasingly aggressive, attacking Polish patrols with stones and branches of trees. In consequence to the expanding pressure, the Ministry of Interior and Administration extended the buffer region along the border for another 90 days from 11 September 2024, with the aim of expanding safety and reducing illegal overruns.

The number of attempts to cross the border illegally declined in November, but incidents continued to be reported. On 8-11 November 130 migrants were on the border trying to get to Poland without the required documents. Border defender besides detained 4 people for helping to illegally cross the border.

The Polish government plans to complete the construction of the border wall and completely safe the border with Belarus until the summertime of 2025 to halt the influx of migrants, which Warsaw describes as part of the hybrid war waged by Russia and Belarus. Additional infrastructure works include the installation of night imagination and thermal cameras, the construction of a fresh patrol road and the reinforcement of a five-foot steel fence. Poland allocates over PLN 2.5 billion for this purpose, half of which was allocated by the Donald Tusk government.

Despite these actions, the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border remains dynamic, and border services must inactive be ready for fresh challenges related to illegal migration and state security.
